Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
