Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
