Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
